Violence at the seat of learning.

We live in a blessed country where every individual has the right to education despite his or her background, class or creed. University education can be obtained by anybody hailing from any part of Sri Lanka as long as they have attained the sufficient marks and Z score for entrance. However one wonders whether society in general values Free Education as it should be valued. Politicization has corrupted this very blessing today.  Most of the Student Unions in universities are influenced and operated by political parties. Parents send their children to universities here in Sri Lanka where the standards are set so high that a degree from such university is recognized anywhere in the world. But all hope and aspirations are sometimes dashed on the ground when their children are caught up in the violence within universities.

Should the authorities ban “ragging” in universities? Do you think it is time for us to put pressure on the entire political party system so that they would take their hands off universities? Or will violence still prevail in other forms because it is an extension of frustrations that students are subject to? Are they bringing in a form of “problem solving” (which is violence) that they are used to even from their home?  How can we stop violence at the seat of learning?

The issue of ragging is a strange one. The practice is perpetuated with those at the receiving end at entry assured that their chance will come and therefore endure once to avail themselves the opportunity to do it over a few years, perfect their techniques.
Why should anyone impose themselves on me because they are in that place before me?
Does this happen anywhere else, at home, in school, in the work place? To what degree and with what difference? Yes, there are consequences, some students are maimed a few have died, very few if any at all are held accountable, very few complaints or redress sought in the judicial system. Why is this. Can ragging be separated out from other social phenomena. We know there are various boding rituals in groups? Some, seem very strange when exposed to different light.

I don’t know if banning ragging will actually eliminate it. I am also not sure if violence in universities is higher, that is if physical violence s a mean of dealing with problems, is greater than in other settings. I think we know whether in most work places physical violence is not a regular method of problem solving.

Among youth, especially males, resorting to physical violence is not unusual, it s quick, it seems to settle things, is seemingly definitive. If is escalates to the use of firearms we have a very different situation, as in gangs in many parts of the world.. there is deterrence of sorts, but also spasmodic violence and blood letting.
We have had a brutal war, two insurrections, election violence condoned, the short cut of the cuff across the head condoned, corporal punishment in schools, the sharp slap across the face in school at home.

None of this excuses the creme ok ok the cream (like the scum this too rises to the top) and their behavior. Many university students are in the vanguard of political action, dedicated and good organizers. Maybe they can do better to think for themselves and not be junior wings of political parties which bring to the university issues that are not of direct and immediate relevance to them as would their courses and the learning environment and facilities.

We can understand the resentments that can build up among those who d not have the good fortune to gain university admission when they hear of and witness the behavior of some university students, their internecine clashes and their violent protests. For those in the universities his stage is also a period for learning, testing and educating for the next stage of their lives.

Banning may not help unless enforcement and close supervision is carried out, information on the ill effects on some who do not wish to participate but are forced to endure is known. University students may also be informed about the phenomenon, what is expected of them and their views obtained while in high school. Adults also bear responsibility for this, political parties that mobilize students before they get into university should also be accountable for the consequences of the actions of their members. more …
