The principles of good governance and democracy are not totally unknown factors to the citizens of Sri Lanka. With a high literacy rate that is over 90% an average Sri Lankan is aware what good governance is. However the question remains regarding empowering the constituents. How can we hold those in office accountable? What is the exact role of civil society in Sri Lanka in this burning issue?
Empowering the people to ensure good governance.

Good governance will also include a willingness to be governed, to obey to fall in line to some extent and this comes with experience .. we might feel comfortable with a single authority if “everything is taken care of” to some extent. Literacy by itself might have little bearing on good governance.. many traditional societies not literate in the modern sense may have been for long periods beneficiaries of good governance.. when swamping changes or cumulative effects not detected at short distance on the present hit.. no solutions were forthcoming, no capacity to address them.. Some argue that the US is getting close to being ungovernable, the discourse veering off to the lunatic fringe fast as far as public discourse in the media is concerned.. We have our problems, we like most societies like quick solutions, like the “hang em high” debate in the media regarding punishments to criminals .. it is so jaded.. We all know that punishment is also to ensure that such things do not happen again.. but we know that there is possibility that the innocent will be punished but we demand this solution. Law enforcement is aware of this .. so criminals hide weapons and when caught take law enforcement to show the cache of arms and then …they die in glorious shoot outs!
Lots of stuff for citizen’s to do. Reflect on whom we elect, why and when; how we participate in the democratic system what signals we give of our concerns and to whom. What independence we have as citizens to represent our interests. Can we take away what we give, as we jump into the drain to permit the motorcade speeding to the people’s place to take decisions on our behalf to improve transport and roads?
Or is it “all a bloody circus mates and the clowns are in control”
Article very interesting, I will necessarily add it in the selected works and I will visit this site

Hello, I want to congratulate your site with 2010. I am sure that, in this new year, your article will please his readers.
Food for thought. Many thanks for that, however I have further thanks to deliver. I am color blind (deuteranopia in my case). I mostly use Opera browser (not sure if that matters), and a good many websites are tricky to comprehend thanks to an unfortunate variety of colors used. On this site, as the choice of colors is good, the website is extremely clear and simple to understand. I am not certain if this was a intentional and conscious deed, or simply good luck, but I still thank you.
After reading you site, Your site is very useful for me .I bookmarked your site!
